As you know, I will be attending PubCon this week and can’t be in two places at once.  So I won’t be attending ad:tech NY this time.  Just because I won’t be there doesn’t mean that I won’t be passing along great information about the great parties and networking opportunities.

Tell me about your company?

Intela is a global performance marketing firm with offices in the US and London. We employ more than 50 staff member who specialize in email marketing, lead generation and custom media planning.

We’re an email marketing agency, but many people don’t realize that we own and operate a publisher platform through which we offer an extended reach to our clients.

So when working with Intela, you not only have access to our database, you have access to our partners who offer email, social media, display and search programs. The combined reach is tremendous, and we work closely with our partners to ensure they have the most optimized creatives, and with our clients to ensure their program is created with both consumers and affiliates in mind (our aim is to keep all parties happy and successful). 

 We currently deliver over 5,000 unique leads daily in the UK, and over 10,000 world-wide, sell more than 50,000 products monthly and capture over 100,000 new households monthly. We continue to develop our offerings as our clients’ needs and marketing trends change, to always remain on the fore-front of emerging technologies.

How did you get into affiliate marketing?

I moved to New York from Florida after graduating college in 98 and started working at a dotcom. It was the high time for internet companies and I landed a job with a contextual targeting agency, one of the first to ever launch. I bounced around to a couple of other start ups and finally settled at Fortunecity.com where I was in sales for a year until I helped launch their affiliate network, Ampira Media.

What was your biggest challenge getting into affiliate marketing?

Getting the company I was at to see the value of switching from CPM to CPA. In 2000, there were very few companies operating on a CPA so my proposal to Fortunecity to launch Ampira was met on deaf ears for quite some time.

What are the main things merchants do that you wish they wouldn’t?

They rarely factor in an additional creative budget and/or effectively test and optimize their landing pages. There are some very good tools to use in ensuring that a landing page is optimized so that when we agree to test an offer, we can be confident that we’re being presented the best possible version of the site. Also, many don’t realize that different sources of traffic perform better with different landing pages; in other words, what works for email may not be as effective for contextual, display, search, etc.

What are the main things affiliates do that you wish they wouldn’t?

They tend to view one affiliate or emailers performance as indicative of how an offer will perform for them, which is definitely not always the case. I find that what works for our email team often doesn’t work for some of our email partners, and vice versa.  I would also like to see more cooperation to work together to optimize a client’s site; there are certainly not an infinite amount of clients out there, and after going through the often time-consuming process of educating clients on CPA, lead gen, etc. to have an affiliate test an offer once and give up if it doesn’t back out right away can be frustrating.  Although, I guess this goes back the previous comment about merchants owning the responsibility of ensuring their sites are optimized, so it’s really a request on both sides for more cooperation!

Where do you see growth in the affiliate field? 

There’s tremendous opportunity overseas, and Intela has worked in the UK market for over 2.5 years now, and continue to expand throughout Europe and Australia. While much of our focus is on emerging trends overseas, I do think we will continue to see more “green” marketing campaigns both domestically and in the UK, and I think product sales of solar powered items will increase this year across many countries.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new traffic sources?

Advertisers seem more understanding than ever of the importance of a message that is clear and compelling for consumers, and most importantly, that speaks to them in a relative format to what they are doing when they get the message. Its key to their success, especially when looking at their campaign from an affiliate/CPA perspective.  

What do you do to improve the world?

I try to be positive as much as I can; I think that energy, whether positive or negative, is picked up on by others.  I recycle, pick up litter and try to be as energy-conscious as possible, but most importantly I’m raising my son to be kind as I believe kindness goes a long way!

What do you do that is green?

Recycle, use solar energy whenever possible. In fact, we are launching a product in our affiliate network this month, which is a solar charged battery for iPods, iPhones and anything with a USB port. The site is www.solarchargeme.com

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

I have a soft spot for kids – I always wanted to teach kindergarten.

How did you get into affiliate marketing?

I’ve been involved in Affiliate Marketing for over four years. I had started as VIP Affiliate Manager at 888.com, which is one of the largest online gambling operators in the world. It has been the best school for online adverting and of the affiliate industry.

Then I was holding the position of Affiliate Director at Duplicate Poker, which is a skill based online poker. I built the program from scratch, and was responsible for building the program, doing sales and lead generation, and managing the entire operation.

I’ve been taking part in all the Affiliate’s industry biggest summits and conventions, and also conventions such as SES (Search Engine Strategies), Ad Tech, Web Master World etc.

I have a deep knowledge of the online and affiliate marketing world, search engines and the internet in general.

After four years in the online gambling industry, I had decided I need a change, and joined AffiliatePLY.com, as I love the idea behind, the fact that it is a unique network and I believe there is a great a potential here.

Reading and learning about online and affiliate marketing, I came across more and more articles and researches about the power of online video ads and content, and the growing use and interest in it, but both advertisers and users.

Where do you see growth in the affiliate field?

I believe the health and beauty industry is growing, especially in the US, and so is the Forex industry, worldwide. We work with many Forex advertisers and see a great demand for it.

I think that also on the marketing methods side of things there is a change – less banners than before, and movement toward rich media ads such as videos. Videos contain ads, content (for example, we have videos with daily Forex news, that are getting updated automatically on the affiliates’ sites daily), and tutorial/ instructional, so every affiliate can utilize it according to his targeted market and users.

Written content is also becoming more and more presence as affiliates and advertisers’ are recognizing its importance, both as sales factor and for SEO purposes.

I like music, so I try to go to concerts and shows, more of the intimate kind, rather than big stadiums shows.

I like the theater, and especially do friends gathering, and spend time with my friends.

Mmmm…I am good. Got everything I need and want.

But there is something. It’s not to me specifically, but more to us, as humans, I guess. Stop fighting and killing – we only live once, so why waste it on hatred?

Stop abusing and killing animals and destroy the earth and nature.

Tell me about your Blog?

I have 2 blog sites. One is Branding100.com and I blog about the online advertising industry in Japan and U.S. Another one is AyakoFromJapan.com and I blog about the online advertising industry in the U.S. in Japanese. I lived in Japan from birth until I was 27 so I use my Asian background as my “niche”. My main goal is to connect Japanese and U.S. online marketers so they can share some ideas that benefit both ends and create more innovation.

What was your first blog?

My first blog was totally33.com. The blog is all about fun/weird stuff in Japan. I started to learn more about WordPress and some other basic tech stuff from working on that blog. I did not do anything special to customize it and just update it for fun every now and then.

What is the biggest tip you would give to a newbie blogger?

Pick something you really feel passionate about. Try out many different tools and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Read lots of other people’s blogs and networks.

What do advertisers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Work with network(s) they really don’t know anything about but their name. They should be very picky who to advertise with in order to reduce parasites.

What do bloggers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Have too many ads on their site because that is very distracting.

Where do you see growth in the blogging field?
Content that utilizes video and mobile capabilities.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new trends?

I enjoy seeing more and more advertisers involved with Twitter. Twitter provides a great place for consumers to connect with advertisers.

What is one thing about you that not many people know?
I was a pianist from age 2-18 and wrote 2 kids songs that were recorded and distributed to elementary schools in Japan.

What’s your favorite book?

One of the business books that has a great message and I enjoy reading over and over is The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott.

What is on your iPod?

Right now, I have Janet Jackson, NKOTB, Beyonce, John Mayer, Pussycat Dolls and some Whitesnake

Mainly Affiliate Summit, AdTech and BlogWorld. But, I am willing to attend any events as long as it’s worth going.

• Shawn Collins and Missy Ward : Because they are the Rockstars who started the Affiliate Summit, not to mention they are just awesome people to talk to.
• Melanie Seery: Because she voices valuable information and opinions about the affiliate tax issue.
• David Niu (BuddyTV) and Ben Huh (ICanHasCheezburger.com): They are some of the sharpest and most fun people I have done business with and I respect both of them as successful entrepreneurs.
• Will Smith : Because he knows how to express himself without swearing.
