I have known and work with Jennifer Mansfield for years she is wonderful, hard working, straight dealing lady. I am happy to personally recommend her to you.

Tell me about your company?

Intela is a global performance marketing firm with offices in the US and London. We employ more than 50 staff member who specialize in email marketing, lead generation and custom media planning.

We’re an email marketing agency, but many people don’t realize that we own and operate a publisher platform through which we offer an extended reach to our clients.

So when working with Intela, you not only have access to our database, you have access to our partners who offer email, social media, display and search programs. The combined reach is tremendous, and we work closely with our partners to ensure they have the most optimized creatives, and with our clients to ensure their program is created with both consumers and affiliates in mind (our aim is to keep all parties happy and successful). 

 We currently deliver over 5,000 unique leads daily in the UK, and over 10,000 world-wide, sell more than 50,000 products monthly and capture over 100,000 new households monthly. We continue to develop our offerings as our clients’ needs and marketing trends change, to always remain on the fore-front of emerging technologies.

How did you get into affiliate marketing?

I moved to New York from Florida after graduating college in 98 and started working at a dotcom. It was the high time for internet companies and I landed a job with a contextual targeting agency, one of the first to ever launch. I bounced around to a couple of other start ups and finally settled at Fortunecity.com where I was in sales for a year until I helped launch their affiliate network, Ampira Media.

What was your biggest challenge getting into affiliate marketing?

Getting the company I was at to see the value of switching from CPM to CPA. In 2000, there were very few companies operating on a CPA so my proposal to Fortunecity to launch Ampira was met on deaf ears for quite some time.

What are the main things merchants do that you wish they wouldn’t?

They rarely factor in an additional creative budget and/or effectively test and optimize their landing pages. There are some very good tools to use in ensuring that a landing page is optimized so that when we agree to test an offer, we can be confident that we’re being presented the best possible version of the site. Also, many don’t realize that different sources of traffic perform better with different landing pages; in other words, what works for email may not be as effective for contextual, display, search, etc.

What are the main things affiliates do that you wish they wouldn’t?

They tend to view one affiliate or emailers performance as indicative of how an offer will perform for them, which is definitely not always the case. I find that what works for our email team often doesn’t work for some of our email partners, and vice versa.  I would also like to see more cooperation to work together to optimize a client’s site; there are certainly not an infinite amount of clients out there, and after going through the often time-consuming process of educating clients on CPA, lead gen, etc. to have an affiliate test an offer once and give up if it doesn’t back out right away can be frustrating.  Although, I guess this goes back the previous comment about merchants owning the responsibility of ensuring their sites are optimized, so it’s really a request on both sides for more cooperation!

Where do you see growth in the affiliate field? 

There’s tremendous opportunity overseas, and Intela has worked in the UK market for over 2.5 years now, and continue to expand throughout Europe and Australia. While much of our focus is on emerging trends overseas, I do think we will continue to see more “green” marketing campaigns both domestically and in the UK, and I think product sales of solar powered items will increase this year across many countries.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new traffic sources?

Advertisers seem more understanding than ever of the importance of a message that is clear and compelling for consumers, and most importantly, that speaks to them in a relative format to what they are doing when they get the message. Its key to their success, especially when looking at their campaign from an affiliate/CPA perspective.  

What do you do to improve the world?

I try to be positive as much as I can; I think that energy, whether positive or negative, is picked up on by others.  I recycle, pick up litter and try to be as energy-conscious as possible, but most importantly I’m raising my son to be kind as I believe kindness goes a long way!

What do you do that is green?

Recycle, use solar energy whenever possible. In fact, we are launching a product in our affiliate network this month, which is a solar charged battery for iPods, iPhones and anything with a USB port. The site is www.solarchargeme.com

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

I have a soft spot for kids – I always wanted to teach kindergarten.

What was your first experience of social media?

My first experience was actually very similar to how Eric Schechter, Clickbooth’s Social Media Manager, first got started with social media. Throughout high school and college, I used social media to promote my music on YouTube, Myspace, and Dmusic.com. At the time, my agenda was focused on getting my music heard. I interacted with fans, sent friendly emails and updates, and returned the favor by providing feedback on my fans music and web pages.

I didn’t really think about the fact that I was learning the basics of branding an image, social media marketing, and the power of creating viral content that others want to talk about.

After graduating from college, I found myself looking for work in an extremely competitive job market. I began researching ways that I could set myself apart from the crowd. It was then that I really began utilizing the power of social media for business purposes. LinkedIn popped up in one of my Google job searches one day, and I decided to join this professional network. It led me to make connections with some very wonderful and influential people, who most definitely impacted my work today.

Now, I am privileged to be part of the Clickbooth PR team and use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained to help Clickbooth continue to grow.

What is the biggest tip you would give to a newbie in social media?

Define your goals. What exactly to you want to achieve? A few examples include: improve customer support, relationship management, connect with people for a possible job, drive traffic, bring in new leads.

Focus on learning and using social media networks that will best meet your goals. That is easier said than done, because a lot of it depends on who you are personally. For example, someone who finds it hard to keep a steady blog might do much better with a microblog such as Twitter – where you can still engage your target audience but with less words that your typical blog.

Be patient. Hopping on the Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogger, Flickr, etc. bandwagon at the same time can overwhelming, frustrating, and often results in less than optimal results. Pick one tool that is fun for you and learn how to use it to help you meet your goals. Once you feel comfortable and have concise feedback from your fans/followers that you’re doing a great job, then pick up the next social media marketing tool.

Where do you see growth in the social media field?

I believe we will continue to see more social media applications integrated with objects and devices geared toward individual preferences that deliver tailored, personalized content. In other words, our networks will become even more portable.

Portable social networks: One device that potentially resembles what we will begin to see more frequently is the Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping platform that connects objects in our lives to social media applications. According the a recent article in Mashable, “a small bakery and cafe in East London is now able to tweet what’s fresh from their oven.” Arduino device is actually configured with specific objects and is programmed to recognize when events occur.

The Intuitive Web: Technologies such as OpenID and OAuth may be glimpses of Web 3.0 and beyond; which store data about yourself (such as profile information), the type of websites you enjoy or rate highly, where you interact with others, and etc.. This is evidence the web is becoming more intuitive; better able to read who you are as an individual and thus optimizing your search results to meet your individual wants and needs.

What new ideas are companies coming up with to connect with their target audience?

Today, consumers want to interact with brands, engage in conversation, and buy things seamlessly. Interruptive, traditional advertising is costly and it distracts consumers from a rich-user experience.

Our attention spans are much shorter than they used to be…if we land on a webpage and it doesn’t load within 5 seconds, we leave. If we end up on a blog that doesn’t catch our attention within seconds, we leave. However, when a good friend posts a link for a new YouTube video, I will click it and watch through it without hesitation. Word of mouth is powerful.

Our Clickbooth Blog, managed by Eric Schechter, is a wonderful example of how we engage and interact with our publishing and advertising partners. Eric has been featured in numerous CB YouTube videos; many are extremely funny, some are geared at informing our audience about how the CPA industry works, and others are interviews with some of our top publishers. What does this show? We are human, we care, we listen, and we would love to hear what you have to say.

A few more examples – JetBlue engages in real conversations with their customers on Twitter. Hope Depot uses Twitter to update followers on new home improvement products. Comcast uses Twitter for customer service purposes.

What do you do to improve the world?

I love volunteering with teenagers. I remember what a difficult age that was and it is just such an amazing feeling to provide leadership and hope for those dealing with low self-esteem.

Recently, I helped to promote and gain exposure for “Stop Hunger Now.” Along with another 140 volunteers, we packaged bags filled with protein-rich meals that were distributed to over 21,000 people locally and internationally. This event was sponsored by Rotary International.

What do you do that is green?

In other things that are green – I have attempted to garden; but I can’t say that my “green” thumb is a big success.

Yesterday was the first day of adtech New York 2009 at the Javits centre.

The Javits centre is very different from the there is space from the Hilton there is space to breath. This year’s adtech has seen more people than ever attending the first day with a busy Exhibition floor and exhibitors telling me they were getting to speak with more people than ever.

The change of venue means that Exhibit hall is all on one floor, gone are the days of the slow top floor and the show has a feel much more like that of the San Francisco show. Good move adtech.

What was the buzz of the show on the first day? Well the mood is still cautions but business has been picking up briskly in the last couple of months. Continuity offers seem to still be the flavour of the year on the offers site. Mobile and social media are starting to come of age bringing both opportunity and challenges.

The headlines and heroes party, the official adtech party was a great event and I would live to thank Graham Eric and the rest of the team at Clickbooth for their hospitality and the VIP pass.
