Tell me about your Company?

I founded Propellernet 6 years ago and we’ve been having a great time of it challenging clients to think in new ways. There are now 20 rocketeers and we all love living in Brighton and changing the world. The growth in demand for and subsequent expansion of our online PR team is taking the industry by storm. Bringing together creative PR’s and analytical search experts is generating some great new thinking, and pushing new frontiers for our clients. I’ve never been so excited to be in this space.

What was your first experience of social media?

Conversing with my Mum via our umbilical cord.

What is the biggest tip you would give to a newbie in social media?

Don’t get carried away by the buzz and the band wagon, keep your feet on the ground and hold on to your long held marketing principles. Ask the questions; who am I trying to reach and what will the payback be. I see a lot of businesses wasting valuable resources and achieving nothing. Fun if you can afford it, but in a recession?

What do advertisers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Waste valuable budget on ridiculous media bookings that clearly will not work for them.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new trends?

I am fascinated by the flux of the publishing industry. Traditional broadcast advertising is dying and Google has sucked the wages out of journalists pockets bringing editorial integrity into question as publishers seek new ways to remunerate their content. It’s a false economy when a PR campaign can generate more value from an increased Google ranking than from the citation that causes that ranking. Will publishers choose to “no follow” any citations unless a fee for the link juice is levied? I watch this space closely, it’s a brave new world.

What’s your favorite book?

Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
