Monday morning, work week begins… I open Twitter to find that a brand new hashtag is trending… #EcoMonday. A quick scan of the #ecomonday list and I see that it’s all about recommending green Twitter users—sort of a focused #FollowFriday. As someone who is in green affiliate marketing, that’s exciting.

One of the greatest things about Twitter is how easy it is to introduce good people to each other, or to seek out good people. Whether you are in green affiliate marketing, affiliate program management, or any kind of digital marketing, Twitter is an amazing vehicle (on any day) to meet new people and start creating relationships and partnerships.

In the spirit of #EcoMonday, I thought I would recommend some people who I think do great things in the Green Marketing world:

@affiliatesummit  Affiliate marketing is at the forefront of Green, from digital marketing to virtual storefronts and offices. Affiliate Summit is a great conference with a great blog to learn about the newest in the affiliate marketing world—green or otherwise.

@ecoaffiliate  Las Vegas based green affiliate program network. Great ideas and products.

@carbonheart  Twitter account for the CEO of the Carbon Advice Group, a green affiliate marketing program for voluntary carbon offsets.

@heatherinbc  Affiliate marketer who writes a fantastic blog about “Boating, Fishing, History and Living in British Columbia.

@greenbiztweets  Twitter account for GreenBiz.com, a great site about all things green and business and marketing out of San Francisco.

Make sure to #EcoMonday all of your favorites from the Green side of Twitter!

Affiliate forum one of the focal points of the affiliate industry, affiliate marketing being very much as online and social occupation. Affiliate forums enable affiliate merchants and networks to engage on conversation about the industry as well as individual issues. They also provide a social point for many who work a home or in small teams.

Affiliate Forum affiliates4u / a4uforum is run by Matthew Wood a UK affiliate and now uk affiliate event manager and his team of moderators.

aff4u

I have been a member of the affiliates4u for a number of years not and it proved very influential in my early career in affiliate management. I have attended several of their affiliate forum events as well as running some of my own for members over the years. Matthew Wood known as Matt Wood to his friends is a charming person who has helped to forward the affiliate industry in the UK. It is a great forum, there are some wonderful people on the affiliates4u / a4uforum forum from affiliates’ who do a few hours a week to real super affiliates’. New forum members are given a warm welcome and there are lots of people who give support. It you have a network or affiliate program to promote then this is the place to communicate with UK affiliates. The forum has been well developed over the years to keep up with the development of the web and users expectations Matt has done a great job there. These updated include things such as enabling users to include their Blog RSS feeds in the forum. The affiliates4u expose have also proved a wonderful success.

Affiliate Forum Abestweb which is mainly a US focused affiliate forum run by Haiko de Poel, Jr.

abestweb

I have also been a member of the Abestweb affiliate forum ABW for many years and have some good friends among its members.  Haiko attends many of the US affiliate summit events and is very helpful and approachable, join the forum and say hello to him. Like the A4U affiliate forum the Abestweb affiliate forum is very welcoming to new members and full of those who as willing to offer help and advice to both new affiliates’ as well as new merchants. The Abestweb forum has not been modified in the way that the A4uforum has been but has stayed true to the original blog formats.

Twitter constantly grows and evolves. New apps respond to Twitter user needs and increase the functionality of Twitter as an interface. Here are some of the recent Twitter apps and how they could benefit affiliate marketing or an affiliate program management team:

Twitority – Using specific keywords, this Twitter app enables you to determine who is deemed most authoritative for those keywords. If you are looking for promotional or lead generation strategies, connecting with the users who have “authority” around keywords associated with your product is valuable.

JustTweetIt – This Twitter app allows you to search for friends with shared interests and stay advised of new Twitter tools. Great for list building or affiliate recruitment.

Twtpoll – This Twitter app lets you create easy poll questions with answer options. A great way to do some research leading up to a product launch.

Twopolar – This Twitter app will tell you what is “trending” on Twitter over a chosen time period- everything from the last 2 hours to an entire month. Ideal for research into how to time a product launch or affiliate campaign.

MyCleenr – This Twitter app allows you to sort Followers based on recent tweets and delete inactive accounts that you are Following. A good tool for general maintenance of your Twitter account.

Tweetube – If you utilize video as part of your affiliate marketing program, this Twitter app is a great way to get YouTube videos out fast and easy.

TwitterSheep –  Simply, this Twitter app creates a word cloud of your tweets. Good for analysis and planning around tweet keywords.

TweetBackup – More of a Twitter service, TweetBackup allows you to back up your Twitter history and restore your account if it crashes. The only catch is you have to be a consistent user to restore it before Twitter deletes your account.

Tweetabix – Ideal for researching and keeping up with Twitter, this app keeps an archive of Twitter user interviews. Again, good for researching recent thought around Twitter.

Who Follows Whom – Another Twitter research tool that can be powerful for list-building and lead generation, this Twitter app allows you to find out the Followers up any 5 Twitter users as well as who they those 5 users Follow.

Add a affiliate forum photo as an Avatar
Using a photo as an Avatar especially when you are new on a forum people are much more likely in engage with a person rather than an unknown character so using a photo in your Avatar will help you open more communication.

Introduce yourself to the affiliate forum
I most affiliate forums there is a section to introduce yourself and the more information you give the better so people know who you are. Do not try and sell anything in this just get to know people.

Affiliate Forum Posting
When new to an affiliate forum I would suggest that you start to engage in the forum by replying to other peoples threads rather than starting your own.

Affiliate Forum Positivity
It is tempting to have a rant on affiliate forums however in the long-term you will get more by being positive than negative. Other users are less likely to engage with you if they think you might bite their head off.

Affiliate Forum Smiles
Adding a smile to a thread or a post will tend to get you more response.

Chose your Post Title Carful
Creating a title that people will want to respond to if you want to illicit reader, interest and replies. Affiliate Forums usually rank well in Google and a good title can get you a lot of interest in your post for a long time.

With all of the new London website design companies, how do you know where to turn and who to talk to? Website design is one of the fastest growing trades and just because someone was great 2 years ago doesn’t mean they are the go to website design company right now.

So if you are looking for a London website design company, what do you look for?

Here are some key factors:

Function:
Good website design makes something easy for visitors to navigate and, if it is an ecommerce site, something easy for visitors to use and purchase from. Sounds easy, right? The key here is to make sure you see examples of past work. Go and try out previous examples of their website design to see if it matches the kind of usability you are looking for.

Visual Appeal:
Website design and the web in general are a visual medium. You need to have something less crowded than a MySpace page but more interesting than Facebook. If your site is all about content delivery, the website design needs to be something people find appealing and can easily read the text or view the images/ videos. And again, if your site is for ecommerce, it is your storefront and salesperson. Make sure your website design looks like a place you want to buy something from.

Creativity:
The days of static website design are long gone. In the world of social media where things change quickly and this morning can sometimes seem like last week, it is important for your website design to be creative and fresh. This means looking for a company that will not only design a website that is creative at the outset, but looking for a company that is willing and able to do consistent creative updates.

London website design is growing along with website design everywhere. While these are website design basics, make sure you have those basics covered when you do your website design hunt!

So you’re on Twitter and interested in website design work or web design news? Where do you go? Who do you talk to? I am both and wanted to check out who else is there and wha they are up to. Here are two Twitter accounts I found if you want to keep up with the website design community on Twitter, along with their profile description:

@Web_Design_Jobs: Tweeting web design and other graphics job leads to you so that you can browse projects and work all at the same time.

@webdesignfans: Web Design Follow us if you want to stay up to date with the latest web design and development news on the interweb!

Both are full of tweets on recent web design developments. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations for web design tweeters!

I have known Stephen Pratley of Shine Marketing since I got into affiliate marketing and affiliate managment, I did not know he was such an Action Man ( you will get the point later) but in the years that I have known him he has been helpful, knowledgeable and incisive. I would recommend Stephen Pratley and Shine Marketing.

Tell me about Shine Marketing?

Shine Marketing build eCommerce sites for online retailers. We come at it very much from a marketing angle rather than just technology or design skills so we make sure that implementing SEO, email marketing or affiliate programmes doesn’t cause chaos when a client wants to implement them further down the line.

What is the future for Shine Marketing?

We’re very much tied to the growth of eCommerce overall, making sure that the offerings of our clients keep ahead of pace. Right now we’re doing some great work with Kingston University on ‘customer decision support’ on online retail sites; making sure shoppers can find what they want and raise conversions on our client’s websites

How did you get into affiliate marketing?

I started an eCommerce business in 2002 – thebeautyroom.co.uk – and came across it then as a merchant. I launched a programme with Affiliate Future who I still have good relationships with today. After that I managed the member recruitment for the ipoints loyalty scheme which was interesting as I was a merchant and an affiliate all at the same time.

What was your biggest challenge getting into affiliate marketing?

Probably understanding how it fits with in all the other things merchants do. It’s not a tactic like email, PPC or SEO as your affiliates do all that. It’s a way of rewarding them, but that means there are more obligations on the merchant to make it work rather than just write a cheque and leave it to your agency.

What are the main things merchants do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Set-it-and-forget-it. For some reason merchants think that affiliate marketing is the silver bullet, free business with no effort. Anyone who has ever managed a commission-only salesforce will know that’s not the case. It needs a business that can already prove itself, and constant work to keep your affiliates up-to-date with what you’re doing.

What are the main things affiliates do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Keep quiet! I think that affiliates should do more to promote themselves, find the best deals merchants have to offer and make new merchants aware of the value they can offer, whether they have expertise in given niches and so on. A few big players do it, but there are loads of affiliates who don’t. Act like a big publisher and don’t be afraid of showing off what you have.

Where do you see growth in the affiliate field?

Definitely in publishers taking a longer term view, focussing on adding real value for the consumer and for the merchant. ‘Old’ media firms are falling apart and there’s plenty of opportunity.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new traffic sources?

One thing we really try to get our clients to focus on is looking at where their traffic is coming form and adapting accordingly. It’s more about better conversions than more traffic, but as they create better content for each niche, there’s a knock on effect in SEO and social media traffic.

What do you do to improve the world?

I’m a big networker by nature and obsessive about my work, and I really enjoy passing on little tips, contacts and help to people who I know will appreciate it. I’ve completely fallen in love with Twitter for doing this on a bigger scale.

What do you do that is green?

I chose my office to be within walking distance of home and only one person commutes here by car. I also cycle quite a lot. It’s really a selfish thing though, I hate being stuck in a car. I don’t think the motivation matters though.

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

My first job in ‘New Media’ was as the account director for the Action Man website. A ridiculous job title for anyone to have.

What is on your iPod?

Endless trance compilations for when I’m on the stationery bike. I’m rubbish with music so when they shut down Pandora.com in the UK it was like ‘the day the music died’. Kieron Donoghue has saved the day with his blog and sharemyplaylists.com so I always have something on in the office he’d approve of.

What’s your favourite book?

I’ve just finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, and I keep dipping back into the 4 Hour Work Week. By Timothy Ferriss. 90% of it is complete fantasy but there is some great stuff in there when I’m a bit overwhelmed with work.

What are your contact details (email, company, blog, facebook, myspace, forums etc) ?

www.shinemarketing.com for work stuff, twitter.com/stephenpratley for random bits about online marketing and cycling, stephenpratley.com is my blog (a bit dusty right now). Facebook and MySpace have fallen off my radar now. Linkedin is good too if I really know you.

Who would recommend you and why?

My clients, nearly all our work comes by word of mouth. I have a crowd of friends from when I used to row also, some of whom are clients and suppliers now. For some reason a lot of them work in IT or media jobs.

Who would you recommend and why?

My PR agency Business Accent PR – great at clearing away the jargon and just getting on with it

Katy Howell at Immediate Future who do social media PR for big brands (a client), another person who is obsessive about what they do. Check out the Twitter guide on their website.

Pete Dickenson at Affiliate Future – set me on the first steps as a merchant and been there ever since.

Lee McCoy – great SEO for sorting out your website (if Shine Marketing didn’t build it!) I worked with him on some real pigs ears before we started link building campaigns.

Georgie Coleridge Cole at Sheerluxe.com – a model affiliate for any luxury merchant.

Affiliates4u.com – encompasses loads of people, but mainly Matt Wood for starting it and creating the best affiliate resource in the UK (if not the world!) , the Expo team for giving the industry plenty of face-to-face opportunities, the moderators for keeping the spammers at bay and about a dozen others who contribute really helpful stuff.

PayPerPost v4.0 is the latest version of the PayPerPost Platfrom. PayPerPost is a Advertising platform where you can pay for bloggers to write about you and review your site, products, or services. Some see is as it paid PR. I came to know the great service provided by Izea and PayPerPost through my friend the great @HeatherinBC who is a Ambassador for Izea (Izea the company behind the PayPerPost v4.0. ).

How it works? As a Blogger
If you have a blog you can sign up to PayPerPost and you find opportunities to write about. You write a post in your own words on your own blog and link to their product or service and get paid! Simple, no worrying about if they make sales from your traffic or anything like that.

How it works? As a Advertiser
Sign up and ask people to write about your product or service and let them know what you will pay. Simple

I have used PayPerPost in the past as an advertiser with some amazing results! While I do not write paid posts myself, I have many friends that do.  The current system is ok but was challenging for a newcomer to it. I was lucky enough to get a key to the new system and get the chance to play! Ted Murphy Izea owner says “Advertisers will get more control over the blogs they work with. Bloggers will never have to fight for an opportunity again. Both parties will get the benefit of a flexible yet straight forward rating system. It’s really exciting for us and I think you will be excited too.”

PayPerPost v4.0 Review – My verdict

payperpost v 4.0

The new PayPerPost v4.0. is very web 2.0 and whomever the user interface designer is should get an award. The new site they is so easy to use and instinctive for the user. If only all user interfaces could be this well designed life would be so much happier. Well done PayPerPost Ted Murphy and the Izea Team.

To learn more about PayPerPost you can see the current system here http://tinyurl.com/2lrwqo

I meet Roland Navarro de Ros who now works for Tracking202 Pro while he was at EDebitPay. Roland was a great affiliate manager there always on call and always trying to help.  If you are looking for PPC tracking software then I would recommend you contact Roland Navarro de Ros at Tracking202 Pro.

Tell me more about Tracking202 Pro?

Tracking202 Pro is a robust PPC tracking software that has unique features and capabilities that no other software has, and yet we are still cheaper than the competition!  Tracking202 Pro is also a part of a bigger 202 world.  Although we are mostly known for our tracking platform; especially the game-changing Prosper202, we also provide services such as, but not limited to: WorldProxy202, TV202, and Meetup202.  Watch out for more cool stuff in the coming quarters. 😉

As a whole, our culture is built on shared values of serving and supporting each other and our users.  As a result, our team has helped support a revolution of affiliate publishers all over the world.

How did you get into affiliate marketing?

My college frat buddy Charles Wang (Double Up Media) recruited me to be an Affiliate Manager for a financially focused Affiliate Network and List Management company.  Incidentally, he was introduced to this business through his brother Arthur, who also owns his own Affiliate Network, TerraMatrix Media.  It’s ALL about RELATIONSHIPS baby!

What was your biggest challenge getting into affiliate marketing?

Getting passed all the B.S., lies, and shadiness of both the advertisers and the publishers.  I have learned that being straight up and honest, as well as caring about your client is always the best way to go.  Sometimes you have to lose money to make money. But at the end of the day, the more you give, the more you will get in return in the long run.  In this industry, that means earning a potential partners TRUST is not only the biggest challenge, but also the greatest achievement.

What are the main things merchants do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Haha, that’s easy.  Over promising and under delivering.  I hate, “oh my gosh Roland, you have to try this offer, it totally kills, you’re going to get over $2.00 a click on it!!!” and then the offer ends up tanking.

Just be straight up with me.  The more data you have that backs you up.  Bring it.  Just don’t lie for the traffic.

And don’t shave/filter/remove leads without at least communicating with me????  You hear me????

What are the main things affiliates do that you wish they wouldn’t?

DON’T BE SHADY! If I say No Incentivized, don’t put it on a Free Wal Mart Co-Reg path on Facebook.  haha!  Stuff like that. Or…please don’t bid on Trademarked terms, and then I end up losing the Advertiser.

So I guess this leads to a bigger wish.  Affiliates, stop living above your means with your AMEX Black Card!?!  Mo Money Mo Problems, and the more you’re in the hole, the more greedy you become, and the more you want to be shady to make even more money for your Bentley payment, Diamonds, drugs, and women.

Where do you see growth in the affiliate field?

Mobile, Social Media, PPV, and Search.  You know what’s crazy?  I was about to rank those four growth areas in respective order.  But then we live in a world, that is merging all four of those things at the same exact time!  Throw in auto-responder emails, transactional SMS, and BAM, WE ARE the next generation of marketing.  Not only that, we are creating new industries and jobs that did not exist even 5 years ago.  This is impressive considering we are supposed to be in the worst financial crisis of our generation.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new traffic sources?

Honestly, its just figuring out placement, conversions, and a way to make money with those eyeballs that see the placement.  With that said, I honestly think the Publishers are the ones taking the most advantage.  For example, with Myspace and Facebook, the Publishers are totally testing the limits of what they can and cannot do to make money off crap like Teeth Whitening, Acai Berry/RezV, and Skin Care.

What do you do to improve the world?

Try to be a better person everyday.  Even if it’s a small baby step, at the end of one year, I have taken 365 steps in the right direction.  Whether it’s spiritually, physically, emotionally, or financially – I understand that I come into contact and have an influence on a good number of things.  So if I strive to better myself, then I know that I will have a positive impact on the world around me.

What do you do that is green?

Well first off, I traded our 3-Series BMW for a eco-friendly Toyota Prius!  what what! 🙂

On a more serious note, I am a co-founder of an internationally recognized non-profit Kamay at Puso (Heart and Hands in the native Filipino language).  In addition to providing physical therapy to children who have been affected by toxic waste contamination, we have a livelihood program for the mothers who in essence “learn how to fish” by creating jewelry that we re-sell in the United States.

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

Hip Hop culture got me out of trouble when I was young.  I can honestly say that skratching records as a DJ, spitting rhymes as a spoken word poet, and pretending to be a breakdancer changed my life forever.  It got me away from being a wannabe gangster hoodlum.

What is on your iPod?

Christian Music like Chris Tomlin and Casting Crowns.  Funky stuff like Breakestra and the Bamboos.  Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend.  Sublime and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Common, J-Dilla, DJ Shadow, RJD2, etc. Really independent stuff like Alpha Pup Records, and guilty pleasures like 2Pac and Snoop.

What’s your favorite book?

Haha wow.  Have you seen my library?  That is impossible to say.  For now, I can say I like anything that Malcolm Gladwell has written (Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers).

What are your contact details (email, company, blog, facebook, myspace, forums etc) ?

Tracking202 Inc.

[email protected]

Who would recommend you and why?

Go to my Linkedin profile and you can see at least 30 of them. 😉

Who would you recommend and why?

GlobalWide Media – Jenny, Sonia, Veronica, and Rachel.  Those girls are probably the greatest asset to any company I have ever witnessed in this industry.  If you want a boutique and personalized approach to Affiliate Management, they totally rock.

Bardon Advisors – Evan is quite honestly the man!  Their offers are pioneering and highlights how ahead of the game they are.  I truly appreciate his professional demeanor, and he is just awesome.  Give him a call and you will know what I mean.

Speaking of Evan and the GlobalWide ladies.  I would have to say any alumni from Vendare/Netblue, Westlake Village (i.e. Valueclick/HiSpeed), or Selling Source…who have gone on and started their own companies or have become crucial members of their new teams.  The kind of talent these companies produced is more than amazing.

Adex – They know how to make offers that convert.  Garett is professional, experienced, and knows exactly what he’s talking about.

JBR Media Ventures – John, Brent, and Rudy…as well as Noah.  They are an institution.  Enough said.

Kenzei – if you are an advertiser and need to monetize your email data without burning it.  Mike Stocker is the way to go.

Azure – If you are interested in integrating yourself with a mobile solution.  Just contact Robert Lee.  They ARE the crossroads of mobile and online.

RevStarsMedia – I’m sorry, but these are my favorite people in the world, and any shout out would not be complete without mentioning Andy, Geoff, and Diana.

TerraMatrix Media – I mentioned them before.  Arthur and Reznik.  They can help you with all sorts of Financial and UK offers.

Convert2Media / Ads4Dough – if you’re a PPC publisher, these two are the hottest affiliate networks around.  Built by and for affiliates.  Ruck and Jason are also two very upstanding and straight up guys who have helped change our industry.

LPGen and Google Smackdown – Jonathan VanClute will teach you how not to get slapped by Google.  I consider Aaron Young a brother from another mother.

DoubleUp Media – an up and coming Database Management company specializing in specialty finance and UK data.

EDebitPay – Bill and Mike Wilson.  I will not be here today without them.  They taught me almost everything I know.

Meetup202 – whether you’re seasoned or a newbie.  This is a great, friendly and supportive environment to network and learn how to make money on the internet.  Leave your attitudes and sales pitches at the front door please. 🙂

and obviously my senior partners, Wes Mahler and Steven Truong.  People have called them the nuns of our industry. They are the most generous and giving people that I know.  They are the reason why I took a big leap of faith with them.  And I know we are going to have a huge and beneficial impact on our industry.

Thank you Roland Navarro of Tracking202 Pro
