Chris Brogan and Julien Smith were talking about the definition of a Trust Agent this week and how that concept applied to people in the online community.

Trust Agents are basically early adopters and heavy users of emerging social media outlets and other internet tools who take on the most power and influence in their area. He goes on to point out that this is happening to individuals rather than businesses in the internet market.

Their book is about how you can become a “Trust Agent.” Buy it. They know what they are talking about. But this post isn’t about the definition of a trust agent, it’s about what to look for in the sea of green online marketers out there vying to be YOUR trust agent.

This post is about how to choose your Trust Agents.
I’m not here to tell you that Max Gladwell is the greatest or that GreenWombat talks about solar too much; I’m here to tell you the Top 5 Trust Agent attributes that you should look for.

Here they are:

Top 5 Trust Agent Attributes

1. A Green Trust Agent is on Social Media

You have to be able to find and interact with a trust agent. @Zappos is such a famous Twitter example of accessibility because you can talk directly to the CEO of Zappos. He twitters about his lunch and his business- you trust him.

2. A Green Trust Agent operates Openly

You have to be able to question a trust agent and get answers. Bottom line.

3. A Green Trust consistently provides Value

A Trust Agent provides value on a daily or weekly basis. Guy Kawasaki is a great example of this. First he creates Alltop, which is awesome. Then he creates MyAlltop; even awesomer. But the thing that makes him a trust agent is that he is consistently contributing value on a day-to-day basis, not just providing great products through his company. Everyday on Twitter @guykawasaki making not only those big strides. Although he does have his critiques see Shawn Collins Guy Kawasaki Keynote at Search Engine Strategies NYC 2009

4. They have an e-Book

I think this is a must. Anyone who wants to be a trust agent in today’s online or marketing world needs to have a solid piece of text that can be sent over email. Have books at Amazon.com and everywhere else, too – great. I want to see your e-Book.

5. Most Importantly: A Green Trust Agent is Green

I look for this as part of my decision-process. As a green online marketer I want to work with other people who have the same vision and values. At the same time, we can’t hold out for people who have all the answers right away. Trust Agents are early adopters by definition, and early adopters run with a good thing when they see it. Trust the vision of an early adopter and hold on to the good that comes of it. We will evolve as a green community step by step.

Let me know what you think?

Carbon Offsetting: The Basics

Carbon Offsetting is the process of neutralizing carbon emissions. Simple, right?

But what is a carbon offset? And what are carbon emissions? What’s carbon, anyway?

These questions are essential to understanding of the process and theory behind carbon offsetting. There are many key terms and, as in any field, there are multiple working definitions of each term, depending on which expert you talk to. Definitions are not set in stone, but they do serve as a starting point for understanding and creating an intelligent conversation.

We live in a world that is transitioning from thoughtless consumption and resource usage to a more thoughtful and reasonable approach to resource management. The green movement and the green economy are both premised on the belief that humans can be sustainable members of the Earth’s ecosystem rather than simply destroy it.

Carbon offsetting is a core approach to raising our society’s awareness and reducing our impact on the environment. But what do all of those words mean?

Carbon Offsetting: Key Terms

Carbon—Carbon can mean a lot of things. In this context, “carbon” typically means the amount of carbon molecules that are part of CO2 compounds that are released into the atmosphere. Did I lose you? Think of “carbon” as the gas being emitted when fossil fuels get burned.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)– A common chemical compound present in fossil fuels that is released as a gas.

Carbon Offset—Money or resources invested into capturing greenhouse gasses or creating and using alternative, clean energy.

Carbon Neutral—When the carbon emissions and carbon offsets of a person, business or group are equal.

Carbon Footprint—The total, overall impact, measured in CO2, of a person, business or group.

Carbon Emissions—The specific amount of carbon generated and released into the atmosphere by a given activity, person, or process.

This week I’ve seen more than one blog talk about how Twitter is growing by over 1000%.  1000% growth!  Maybe it’s good that Evan Williams was called to the White House to talk about the economy.  It could be my twitter competition drawing in all their new users.  🙂

The internet is the future of green marketing and social media is the future of everything marketing. As I’ve said before, social media already is and will continue to be a compelling marketing channel for the green economy.

People and companies in the green movement tend to have a low tolerance for “In-Your-Face” advertising, though, and a vocal and active reaction when it happens: not only do they ignore it but they tend to give it the stiff-arm and talk about it. I say:

Good. Whether it’s Malcolm Gladwell talking about his theories in the Tipping Point or MaxGladwell.com talking about the nexus between green marketing and social media, the evidence is there that word-of-mouth marketing has power and that word-of-mouth is fast becoming “Word-of-Web.

@greenbiztweets : Awesome. Network.

@bestgreenblogs : The stories and recommendations just keep coming. A great place to start your journey into the online green world. It’s a feed with personality that delivers just what they say: the best green blogs.

@treehugger : TreeHugger.com is a great blog.

@treehugger has great contests and over 6,000 Followers that make a great network for the green world.

@greenoptions : First green blog network on the web & they always have great stories. Recently they’ve had California politicians starting to do guest blogs with them, including Gavin Newsom.

@planetgreen : They do practical, actionable tips for living a greener day to day …and they’ve got Tommy Lee on their page wallpaper. Basically, they rock.

@maxgladwell : self-described “nexus of social media and green living & a better world through technology, marketing and sustainability consulting.” I mean, we should be meeting up for happy hour.

@EnergyGeekCa : Investigative renewable energy reporter. If that’s not cool enough for you as a job title, you’ll dig the writing too.

@eproulx : Self-described activist and entrepreneur. Steady stream of great ideas. Recently said, “Online advertising is the new traditional.” I mean, you want to follow the thoughts of someone who believes that.

@Carbon_Offset: The Carbon offsetting twitter with lots of ideas about carbon offsetting, carbon credits and green marketing

@GOODinc : Ok, so it’s not all green, but it is all GOOD. The twitter account for the amazing magazine from LA that doesn’t charge subscription. “Pay what you want” and 100% goes to a non-profit. What? Amazing.

@murraynewlands :  I love this stuff and will be tweeting about it. I love and tweet all things green and online and marketing. Find me on Twitter and say hello.

What is Green Online Marketing? As with any question worth asking, the answer isn’t simple. Green online marketing is about interconnectedness and adding something of value- both to the marketplace and to the Earth.

The American Marketing Association considers the marketing of environmentally safe products to be green marketing, and I agree. As an online green marketer myself, I know it is far more than that.

Green marketing and the emerging green economy are changing the way that consumers, companies and marketers look at products. Rather than viewing marketing as little more than a fancy pitch from marketers to potential customers, green marketing sets the bar higher by expecting the product to be healthy, good for the Earth, and something that consumers can feel good about using.

Online interactions are also changing the way people look at marketing in general. Word of mouth is proving to be just as important as national advertising messages. Local recommendations and trusted online networks are once again where consumers turn when they need to make a new purchase. Online social media is about connecting people around common goals, beliefs and conversations. Websites like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and blogs empower web users to share information and opinions at rates not possible even 5 years ago, and that changes the game of marketing entirely.

Just as the relationship between a human being and the Earth is becoming more transparent and each of our roles growing more and more important, so to are the roles of consumer and marketer becoming more transparent and important with the advent of social media networking. Whether through affiliate networking, link-sharing, or forum discussions, the idea of interconnectedness is a vital, driving force for online and affiliate marketing.

Green online marketing empowers forward-thinking individuals to use low-impact advertising techniques to get the word out about eco-conscious products. (Imagine how much smaller the carbon footprint (lower carbon emissions) of a Google ad or a twitter competition campaign is vs. a single billboard in a major city).

The green/ eco-friendly/ eco-conscious/ environmental movement is all about community and viewing the world and our ecosystem as an interconnected web. Because of our interconnectedness, green-minded consumers want to buy, sell and be associated with products that keep that web healthy. In the same way, people in a social media network want to be connected to other users that keep them healthy, smiling and contribute something of value. Green online marketing combines environmental consciousness with the focus on networking and the notion of adding value that are central to social networking to create an organic, effective approach.

Here are my quick tips to using twitter in bullet points!

Twitter Tips-Know why you are using it / know your audience.
If it is to have a personally conversation with friends they just stick to them. If you are using it for a company then follow that path. You can mix the two but be careful.

Twitter Tips-Setup a proper profile
Use your photo or a logo if it is for your company. People are much more likely to follow a person unless you are a very large brand.
Write a good bio and include your url.
Customise the background it makes you stand out.

Twitter Tips-Follow people who follow you.
Lots of people only follow people who follow them. If you want to you can use tweetlater.com

Twitter Tips-Find people you know.
Find people you know and follow them they are likely to be having conversations you are interested in.
Find groups you are a member of you will find people you know and people like you.
Find your competitors and you will find more people you know.

Twitter Tips-Think about what you twitter.
Be careful what you twitter, if you setup a company twitter and just twitter about the coffee you are having how many commercial contacts want to know that? If your friends are following do they want to know about your products all day? A rule of thumb I was recently told was to talk about other things 5 times more then what you sell and make it of value to your audience.

Twitter Tips-Use TweetDeck
It is great for sorting out your conversations.

Twitter Tips-Use twitter in your own way
People will tell you, you must use twitter like this or that find the way you like to twitter and use it that way. Yes listen to what people say but it is your twitter profile.

-Have fun!

Top Five Reasons Why Social Media Will Drive The Green Economy

Social media on the internet means something different to everyone, especially in business. But one thing is certain: it is here to stay. One of the only things growing right now are social media networks, most notably Linked-In, Facebook and Twitter. At the same time, companies and people are becoming more and more green everyday, both out of desire and necessity.

I believe that social media will drive the emerging green economy. Here’s why:

1. The U.S. Government is using it.

President Barack Obama built much of his following through internet fundraising. He has the most followers by a landslide on Twitter. John McCain does Top Ten lists on his Twitter account. Just last week a U.S. Congressperson Twittered DURING official meetings. Twitter’s founder was invited to the white house to advise the President on the economy. And he twittered about it. Police and fire rescue teams have begun to use Twitter as an effective way to immediately update large numbers of people about events as they happen. Emerging businesses understand that to appeal to today’s eco-savvy consumer you need to be environmentally conscious. The White House has included green jobs in its economic recovery plan and President Obama speaks openly about his desire for a national cap & trade system. Combine this with the recent appointment of Van Jones as lead advisor to the White House on green jobs and you have an eco-friendly recipe for an economy with green blood running through its social media veins.

2. Spirit of Innovation

Social media breeds innovation and the emerging green economy demands it. Our brightest and newest minds have grown up in an eco-conscious culture, and they’ve grown up using social media. When they create something new, they will use these familiar but still evolving tools to address the most pressing climate issues of our time. And, in a time of economic turmoil, social media is a cheap way to advertise and get messages out. As it becomes more and more important for companies to be eco-conscious, they will turn to the inexpensive and effective world of social media.

3. It’s Almost Carbon Neutral

This one is simple: social media happens online. I recently read that 2 Google searches require about the same amount of energy as boiling a pot of water for tea. So, it’s not zero impact. But think about the amount of energy it takes to drive to the library, add that to the energy it took to print and ship the documents.

4. Consumers Want Both Social Media and Green Methods

In a time of recession when few businesses or stocks are growing, two industries and areas that consistently post growing numbers: social media and green business. Supply and demand, as always, will reign supreme.

5. People Like Me and You

The future is, as they say, what we make of it. I spend a good deal of time at trade shows, advertising conferences and business development seminars. From my unscientific count, I would say approximately EVERYONE is working on a product or a campaign that at least touches on the green perspective or incorporates social media. Whether companies are building products specifically for social media, like the TweetDeck or Facebook Apps, or paying money to monitor and utilize it with companies like Radian6 or SM2/Techrigy, social media is what’s happening. And green? Look around you. You recycle your soda cans, you at least think about buying organic vegetables, and you’re reading this Top Five Reasons Why Social Media Will Drive The Green Economy list on the internet, not in the newspaper, right?

Carbon Offsetting Affiliate Program

Carbon Offsetting Affiliate Program

I am happy to represent the Carbon Offsetting Affiliate Program for the Carbon Advice Group which is one of a growing number of Green Affiliate Programs.

What is Carbon Offsetting? In our daily lives at home and work, driving a car or taking a flight, we use energy. Most of that energy comes from burning fossil fuels that send carbon emissions into the atmosphere. This creates our carbon footprint. Carbon offsets fund renewable energy solutions and tree planting to help to balance that footprint. You can reduce your carbon footprint and offset the part that you cannot eliminate. Balancing your carbon footprint with carbon offsets makes you carbon neutral.

Why should you join the Carbon Offsetting Affiliate Program?
1) It is an opportunity to make money as an affiliate.
2) Do something to help combat climate change and preserve the environment for future generations.
3) Consumers are increasingly becoming ethically and socially aware and this is an opportunity to profit from environmental consumer spending.
4) There is a “feel good factor” every time you recycle. You will get the same feeling promoting this programme.

Some key points the Carbon Offsetting Affiliate Program:
15% commission sales
60 day cookies
Absolutely NO leaks or ads!
Deep links right to products
Great communication with affiliates and regular updates and promotions Our Partner Program is “affiliate friendly”
