Tell me about your Blog?

The Slums Off Hollywood Boulevard http://slumshollywood.blogspot.com/ is my entertainment and music blog , where I review offbeat but intelligent books, music and films. I occasionally interview people like Dr. Deena Weinstein who has written several book about heavy metal, and Susan Dynner, director of the film “Punk’s Not Dead” And sometimes I even write about my wacky adventures living in Hollywood and New York.

What was your first blog?

My first blog was on my website www.jadeblackmore.com. Lots of short tidbits from the news and gossip for writers and musicians. I haven’t updated it in awhile, but the other parts of the site are updated regularly.

What is the biggest tip you would give to a newbie blogger?

Develop your own style and niche. Don’t copy what’s popular. How many more snarky blogs about celebrities do we need?

What do advertisers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Use pop-up or pop-under ads. I also hate spam blog comments, though that trend seems to be abating.

What do bloggers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Go too long without adding an entry. People tend to forget about your blog when that happens. I used to be guilty of that, but now I try to add a short blog at least every 2-3 weeks even when I’m really busy.

Where do you see growth in the blogging field?

In business blogging. Blogging started out as a “personal diary” kinda thing and then veered toward entertainment and celebrity, but now more blogs are product and profession oriented .

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new trends?

I see a lot of little ads that look like editorial or links to articles on Facebook and other social media. Some of them are pretty funny-or gross, like the white teeth/yellow teeth ad I see absolutely everywhere.

What do you do to improve the world?

Be positive and encouraging to people around me .There’s too much negativity in the world.

What do you do that is green?

I’ve always recycled as far back as 1989. I also have a small garden on my balcony where I grow peppers, corn and beets. And even though I live in L.A. I walk to the store and take the subway to run errands.

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

I ran track (middle distance) in junior high!

What’s your favourite book?

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

What is on your iPod?

Lee Scratch Perry, Death (the Detroit protopunk band, not the metal band), Love by the Cult, Early 60s Rolling Stones, the Ramones.

How do you prefer to communicate?

The old-fashioned way-in person.
